Why We Started Royale Abaya
Share
We didn’t start Royale Abaya because we saw a business opportunity.
We started it because we were frustrated.
Two sisters living in Canada, both wearing abaya, both spending hours online trying to find pieces that actually felt like us. Pieces that were elegant without being stiff. Modest without being frumpy. Beautiful without costing $300.
We kept coming up empty.
The options were either cheap and poorly made — the kind where the fabric pills after two washes — or luxury priced so high it felt inaccessible for everyday wear. There was almost nothing in between. Nothing that felt like it was designed for Muslim women in the West who wanted to look put-together, feel confident, and not compromise their values to do it.
So we built it ourselves.
Royale Abaya started during Ramadan. We were sitting together after iftar, scrolling through our phones again, frustrated again, and one of us said — why don’t we just make it?
We spent months sourcing fabrics in Egypt, testing silhouettes, getting samples made and rejecting them until they were right. We wanted satin that felt luxurious but breathed. Cuts that were modest but moved beautifully. Colours that actually photographed well in Canadian light.
When we finally put on the first piece that felt right, we both knew.
This is what we’d been looking for.
Since then, every abaya we’ve released has been designed with one woman in mind — the woman we were when we started searching. A Muslim woman in Canada who wants to feel elegant. Who wants modest fashion that doesn’t feel like a compromise. Who wants to wear something she’s genuinely proud of.
That woman is who we build for. Every single time.
We’re so grateful you found us.
